Michael Tignor

Dr. Michael R. Tignor serves as Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, he served as Interim Director of Bands and Instructor of Brass at the University of West Alabama.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tignor earned a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Louisville, where he served as trombone section leader and became the Cardinal Marching Band's first Student Arranger. He later earned a Master of Arts in Music Education from the University of South Florida and a Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. His conducting mentors include Patrick Dunnigan, Rodney Dorsey, David Plack, Amy Acklin, and Fred Speck, and he studied wind band arranging with Chandler Wilson, Patrick Dunnigan, and Al Greener.

Dr. Tignor is an active arranger, drill writer, and clinician/adjudicator. His research focuses on athletic bands, lifelong musicianship, and modern band pedagogy and has been published in The Florida Music Director and presented at national and state conferences, including the College Band Directors National Association Athletic Band Symposium, the National Association for Music Education National Conference, and the Florida Music Educators Association State Conference.

Dr. Tignor is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, North Carolina Music Educators Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He resides in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with his wife, Audra, their children, Teddy and Maggie, and their dog, Lily.
