A student must complete a Petition for Exemption form and submit it to the office
of Housing & Residence Life (documentation will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis).
Deadline to submit a Petition for Exemption:
June 30 for students beginning in Fall
Nov. 30 for students beginning in Spring
Exemption Reasons:
Married student living with a spouse (attach a copy of marriage license)
Parent or guardian with legal custody of minor children (attach birth certificate
or documentation)
Over 21 years of age or will be before August 1 (exemption only)
Veteran (attach official documentation/proof)
Enrolled in an academic program that is offered fully online
Living with parent(s) or legal guardian within twenty miles of the school (see next
section for map) AND within the state of North Carolina (exemption only)
Other special needs (documentation reviewed on a case-by-case basis.) Please include
a detailed, descriptive reason plus any needed documentation to support the request.
Most dining requests will fall under the special needs category.
Campus housing is available for students enrolled during the semester. Undergraduate
students must be enrolled for six semester hours or more, and graduate students must
be enrolled for six semester hours or more. The University does not provide family
housing.
The housing application fee is $150. It is non-refundable and must be paid at the
time of admission or can be deferred to your student account.
There is a section on the application to include a roommate's name. Both students
must request each other and have the application submitted. It may not be possible
to grant roommate requests received after June 1 (for fall assignments) and November
1 (for spring assignments).
Freshmen requests are based on space availability.
Applicants’ assignments are made based on the date the application is received. Students
can request a specific roommate of the same gender. While consideration is given to
roommate preference requests, it may not be possible to grant requests received after
June 1 (for fall assignments) and November 1 (for spring assignments).
The housing assignment information will be sent in early May (for fall) or early December
(for spring). The email will include the name of the residential community and room
number, roommate’s name, and contact information so roommates can contact each other
to begin discussing what each is bringing. A student applying after the initial assignment
information has been sent should receive their assignment information within two weeks.
Assignments cannot be changed once a student arrives on campus. There is a grace period
at the beginning of the semester before a room change is made. This allows roommates
to make a good-faith effort to resolve differences and for the University to assess
housing needs.
Following this grace period, Housing will allow students to change assignments during
the Room Change Period. Room Change Period usually occurs within two to three weeks
following the first day of classes.
Following the Room Change Period, students desiring to change rooms/roommates must
meet with their Residence Life Coordinator and participate in mediation. Any student
who changes rooms without prior approval will be assessed an administrative fee in
addition to being sent through the Student Conduct process.
The standard agreement (contract) is for the length of the academic year (August to
May). The 12-month agreement (contract) is for a full year (August to July).
Access to residence halls is managed by a computerized key card access system. Card
readers at each facility grant access to only those students who reside in the building.
Students residing in the Courtyard Apartments will be issued a key to the entrance
door of their unit, which will also unlock their bedroom.
Student rooms offer free wireless internet and are furnished with:
Twin bed (mattress 80” x 36”)
Desk, desk chairs
Dresser
Window blinds
Cypress Hall rooms have wardrobes; all other residential communities have built-in
closets.
Central air is provided in all residential communities except for North Hall (each
room is equipped with a window unit).
Laundry and vending machines are located on the first floor of each facility.
Additional information for each residential community can be found on the Housing Options page.
Each resident may bring a refrigerator that is not to exceed 4.5 cubic feet
One microwave (not to exceed 1200 watts) is permitted per room.
Due to electrical demands on the circuitry in North Hall, microwaves are not permitted
in student rooms. However, the university has installed a microwave in the lounge
on each floor.
Cooking with or extracting hot grease is prohibited in the residence hall rooms
In the Courtyard Apartments, cooking appliances are permitted in the kitchen area
but must be attended to and monitored when in use.
The University prohibits animals except freshwater fish, service animals and approved
emotional support animals. All ESAs must be approved by UNCP’s Accessibility Resource Center (ARC).
The Office of Business Services in the Auxiliary Services Building is responsible
for UNCP’s Mail Center. Operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m.
Services offered are:
Regular USPS Mail
Express Mail
UPS
Courier Mail
Bulk Mail (standard)
United Parcel Service (UPS)
Federal Express (For UPS and FedEx packages, you must have a tracking number)
Package pickup, stamp purchase and other postal services are provided at the Mail
Center.
Students living in the residence halls must purchase a meal plan, while the meal plan
is optional for students residing in Courtyard Apartments.
Freshmen are allowed cars on campus; they must be registered and display a current
UNC Pembroke parking permit.
For information on how to obtain a permit and the fees for permits, visit Parking Registration.
Residents must submit a Petition For Release or Exemption to the main office and obtain approval to be released from the housing agreement.
The “Petition for Exemption” process is reserved for students who meet specified qualifications to waive their
dining or residency requirement. This should be completed before signing a housing agreement.
If approved, the requirement for a meal plan is automatically released as well.
If denied, the student will be bounded by the Freshmen and Sophomore Residency Requirement.
The “Petition for Release” process is for students who have signed either a housing or dining agreement and
is reserved for students who have a significant and unforeseen change that occurred after the agreement was signed that prevents them from upholding their
contractual obligation.
A student can petition a release from their housing agreement, dining agreement, or
both.
If approved for a housing release, the required meal plan is automatically released.
Petitions for release or exemption, solely for the purpose of living in off-campus
housing or to commute from home, will not be approved.
Any approved petitions are subject to the university’s refund policy, cancellation
fees and could be prorated based on usage. Based on the housing agreement you signed, release from your housing agreement will
result in a cancellation fee determined by the date you cancel.
A release or exemption is only applicable for the academic year for which you request
and must be resubmitted each academic year.
Payment for the housing fee can be covered by financial aid. Each student’s financial
situation is different. To confirm which fees are covered by financial aid contact
your Financial Aid Counselor.
