American Indian Studies
Explore the histories, cultures and contemporary issues of Indigenous peoples — with a focus on the Southeast. American Indian Studies at UNC Pembroke connects you directly to local tribal communities through courses on Native governance, health, environmental justice and more. You’ll gain insights and skills that apply to many fields — from education and law to social services and museum work. Founded in 1887 to educate American Indian students, UNC Pembroke has grown into one
of the most diverse campuses in the Southeast. Building on that legacy, the Department
of American Indian Studies explores the rich diversity of Native history and culture,
promotes research and scholarship on Indigenous issues and prepares students for professional
and academic careers.


American Indian Heritage Center
The American Indian Heritage Center serves as a central hub for all students interested in Native American culture and history.
