At UNC Pembroke, the Master of Arts in English Education isn't just a degree — it's
a launchpad for your future. Whether you're a current educator looking to grow your
impact or a lifelong learner drawn to deeper literary study, our program offers two
flexible concentrations tailored to your goals. Choose the path that fits your passion
and take the next bold step in your academic or professional journey.
Our graduate courses offer the perfect balance of flexibility and connection. This
hybrid program combines the convenience of online learning with the engagement of
occasional in-person classes. Most courses are held in the evenings to accommodate
working professionals and busy schedules.
Ready to advance your skills and credentials? The licensure track blends theory and
practice in teaching, literacy and leadership. Choose from a range of literature and
writing courses to tailor your experience. You'll finish with a capstone portfolio
and step confidently into advanced roles in education.
This concentration is a good fit if:
You already have a Standard I (A) teaching license in English (grades 9–12) and want
to upgrade to a Standard II (M) license.
You want to continue teaching in public schools and need a master's degree that strengthens
your classroom skills and credentials.
You're preparing for career advancement as a licensed teacher.
Important Notes:
You must already hold a teaching license to be eligible.
This program leads to an M license (an advanced license), not to initial licensure.
Designed for deep thinkers and future scholars. The thesis track offers a research-intensive
experience in literature, language and cultural studies. Build advanced analytical
and writing skills, then complete an original thesis that showcases your academic
voice. It's an ideal path if you're planning to pursue a PhD or a career in research,
publishing, or communications.
This concentration is a good fit if:
You're not seeking a public school teaching license.
You are pursuing a master's degree for professional development or personal growth.
You want to prepare for doctoral or further graduate study in English.
Important Notes:
This program does not lead to a teaching license.
If you later decide to pursue public school licensure, you can transfer up to 12 credit
hours into the MAT program.
To teach English at a community college, you need a master's degree and 18 hours of
graduate-level English coursework. At UNCP, we don't stop there.
Our MA in English Education goes beyond the minimum by giving you hands-on experience in how to teach writing and literature — skills most programs
leave out. You'll graduate not only qualified, but truly prepared to lead a classroom and connect
with students from day one.
Add ESL Training
Make your degree more powerful by adding ESL training. This option gives you the tools
to support English language learners in your classroom. You’ll take focused courses
that build confidence and prepare you to meet the needs of multilingual students.
Stand out and become an expert in the field.
My goal is to help everyone I work with or teach to grow. I aim to empower their strengths
and achieve success. Seeing them achieve their potential brings me life.
UNCP's Educator Preparation Program is fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation
of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and leads to initial licensure in North Carolina.
