Program Details

UNCP’s MAEd in Middle Grades Education is designed for currently licensed teachers who want to grow their skills and make a bigger impact in the classroom. If you already hold an initial North Carolina teaching license in middle grades, this program helps you take the next step—both professionally and academically. Completion of the MAEd leads to master’s-level North Carolina licensure in your content area.

You’ll deepen your understanding of how young adolescents grow and learn, build stronger teaching strategies and explore new ways to engage your students. As part of the program, you’ll choose a focus area in Language Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies and complete 21 credit hours in that subject. Whether your goal is to lead in your school, shape curriculum or become a more effective educator, this program will help you get there.

Build your skills in reading, writing and teaching language arts. You’ll study literature from different time periods and genres, including classic and contemporary works. Courses in writing, grammar and teaching methods help you connect what you learn to the classroom. Graduate ready to help students grow as readers and writers

Strengthen your math knowledge and your ability to teach it. You’ll study topics like algebra, geometry and statistics. At the same time, you’ll learn how to teach problem-solving and critical thinking in ways that work for middle grades students. By graduation, you’ll be able to make math more approachable and engaging for your student

Deepen your understanding of science while learning how to teach it. You’ll take courses in biology, chemistry, geology or physics. Choose based on your interests. You’ll also explore how to teach scientific thinking through hands-on learning and real-world questions. This concentration helps you make science exciting and meaningful for middle school students.

Make social studies come alive in your classroom. Explore history, geography, culture and more. You’ll take courses that help you understand how people, places and events shape the world. You’ll also learn how to bring these ideas into your teaching in ways that connect with your students.
