Prepare for the Stage and the Spotlight

Passionate about performing? Our Musical Theatre program combines intensive training with real performance opportunities to help you turn your talent into a career.

Take Center Stage

You’ll take private voice lessons, study acting in depth and build your dance skills. Music and theatre courses strengthen your craft, while a strong liberal arts core prepares you to think critically.

You’ll learn from experienced faculty who know the industry and will help you grow with personalized feedback. From classroom to center stage, this program prepares you for an exciting, successful career.

Shows are produced at the Givens Performing Arts Center (ranked among the top 25 university performing arts centers by bestvalueschools.com) and other venues on campus. Musical Theatre students are also encouraged to participate in plays produced by UNCP’s Theatre program.

Requirements

In addition to applying to UNCP, you’ll complete a separate music department application and audition process for acceptance into the program.

Audition Information

Your audition will include:

  • Two memorized songs with piano accompaniment:
  • One must be from the Broadway/musical theatre repertoire.
  • The second can be musical theatre or classical repertoire.
  • One memorized monologue (around one minute).
  • Sightreading: You’ll be asked to perform a short piece of music you haven’t seen before.

A dance audition is not required for admission.

Minor in Musical Theatre

The Musical Theatre minor offers a solid foundation in singing, acting and movement. You'll also gain an introduction to the history of the genre. It’s a great way to build performance skills, explore creativity and stay connected to the stage while pursuing another area of study.
