Earn an MAT in Social Studies

At UNC Pembroke, the Middle Grades Social Studies Education (6-9) and Secondary Social Studies Education (9-12) tracks within the MAT program prepare aspiring teachers through a 30-credit curriculum that combines content mastery, pedagogy and full-time internships. The Middle Grades track equips candidates to teach history, geography and social sciences using discussion, projects, primary sources and critical-thinking lessons tied to current issues, culminating in North Carolina licensure for grades 6-9. The Secondary track deepens this focus by emphasizing historical thinking, research skills, and real-world case studies for high school learners, leading to licensure for grades 9-12.
