Sociology & Criminal Justice

At UNC Pembroke, sociology and criminal justice blends classroom learning with hands-on experiences to cultivate critical thinkers ready to engage thoughtfully with social issues. Students can pursue majors in both Sociology and Criminal Justice or minors in sociology, criminal justice, substance abuse, medical sociology and community development just to name a few. The department emphasizes applied learning — through internships, field practicums and community-based projects — preparing graduates for careers in social services, law enforcement, corrections and beyond .

We offer two dynamic programs designed to help you understand people, society and the systems that shape our world. Whether you're drawn to the study of human behavior and social change through sociology, or you're preparing for a career in law enforcement, public safety or legal services through criminal justice, you'll find a program that equips you with the skills, knowledge and real-world experience to make a meaningful impact.

Criminal Justice

The criminal justice program at UNC Pembroke prepares students to lead and serve in a complex and evolving field. Through courses in criminological theory, law enforcement, courts, corrections and public administration, students gain a strong foundation in the structure, function and impact of the criminal justice system. Most students complete a hands-on internship with a criminal justice agency, applying what they’ve learned in real-world settings. For those with extensive professional experience, a course substitution is available.

The program is accredited by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, ensuring students receive high-quality, career-relevant instruction that meets statewide professional standards.

Sociology

If you find yourself questioning the social causes behind issues like poverty, crime, family dynamics, inequality or the impact of community development, then sociology may be the major for you. At UNC Pembroke, the sociology program helps you explore how people interact, how societies are structured and how social change takes shape— locally and globally.

Students gain a deep understanding of human behavior and social systems while building valuable skills in research, critical thinking and problem solving. Recognized Experts Preparing Tomorrow’s Changemakers

Our criminal justice faculty bring a broad range of expertise, academic training and real-world experience to the classroom. Many are nationally recognized for their research and their insights are grounded in firsthand work across the criminal justice system — in courtrooms, correctional facilities, juvenile centers and law enforcement.

Beyond academia, our faculty have served as probation and parole officers, NCIS agents, homeland security professionals, postal inspectors and experts in prison operations, parole and clemency. Others have led and worked in social service organizations, counseling centers, vocational rehabilitation agencies, employment services and rural and economic development programs. This depth and diversity of experience help students connect classroom learning to real-world practice — and prepare them to make an impact in their communities and careers.

Internships

Both the sociology and criminal justice programs at UNCP offer valuable internship opportunities that connect students with hands-on experience in the field. Many students go on to secure full-time positions with their host agencies after graduation. Internship placements have led to careers in state and federal probation and parole, sheriff’s departments, teen court administration and youth violence prevention programs.

Students pursuing a sociology or criminal justice degree online must transfer all of UNCP’s General Education requirements — including two hours of physical education — to stay on track for degree completion. While all major coursework is available online, general education and non-major courses may not be offered in an online format. Planning ahead with a transfer advisor is essential for a smooth transition.
