UNCP Hosts Emmy Award-Winning Alumnus Newy Scruggs

UNC Pembroke alumnus Newy Scruggs,’94, is returning to his alma mater to inspire the next generation of leaders, sharing how his experiences at UNCP helped launch a broadcasting career that has earned him 18 Emmy Awards and national recognition.
Scruggs will give a keynote talk at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, at the James A. Thomas Hall auditorium. The event, hosted by the Thomas College of Business and Economics, is free and open to the public.
With his talk “From Pembroke to Prime Time,” Scruggs will share his journey from UNCP to a nationally recognized career in sports media. Attendees will hear about the pivotal role UNCP played in his success and the lessons he has learned over three decades in broadcasting.
In addition to his keynote, Scruggs will lead workshops and participate in a community meet-and-greet to equip students with personal and professional growth strategies. His insights will focus on making an impact, building purposeful career plans and leveraging mentorship and community connections.
Scruggs serves as the sports anchor for NBC 5 in Dallas–Fort Worth and hosts the Emmy-winning show Out of Bounds. As an award-winning sportscaster, nationally syndicated radio host and author, Scruggs has graced the screens of NBC Sports, ESPN and TLC. “Scruggs continues to give back to his alma mater in meaningful ways — serving two terms on the UNCP Board of Trustees, addressing graduates and new students as both a commencement and convocation speaker, and establishing two scholarships, including the Newy Scruggs Endowed Sports Broadcasting Scholarship.
