Research and Internship Opportunities

Mentor-led research and internships give you hands-on experience, build your skills and boost your resume. With oversight from experienced professionals, you’ll explore your interests, make valuable connections, contribute to your field and open doors to future opportunities.

Here are some tips to help you find a research mentor at UNC Pembroke:

  1. Explore your interests — Think about what subjects or topics excite you the most so you can find a mentor who aligns with your passions.

  2. Check faculty profiles — Visit department websites to learn about professors’ research areas and see who might be a good fit.

  3. Attend campus events — Go to research fairs, talks and symposiums where you can meet faculty and learn about their work.

  4. Ask: Never be afraid to ask. Faculty are eager to collaborate with students passionately pursuing their interests.
  5. Reach out early — Contact professors by email or in person to introduce yourself, express your interest and ask about research opportunities.

  6. Be prepared — When you meet potential mentors, show enthusiasm, ask questions and be ready to discuss your skills and goals.

  7. Stay open-minded — Sometimes the best mentors come from unexpected departments or fields, so don’t limit yourself.

  8. Follow up — If you don’t hear back right away, politely follow up to show your continued interest and professionalism.

Taking these steps will help you connect with a faculty member who can guide your research journey and support your growth.
