Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to provide clinical mental health services to support the well-being and academic success of students and contribute to a healthy campus climate. This is accomplished by providing individual and group counseling, crisis management, consultation and referral services and prevention education to the campus community.

Services

CAPS offers free, confidential mental health services to currently enrolled UNCP students. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, dealing with stress, or navigating a personal challenge, we’re here to help you take care of your emotional and psychological well-being.

Counseling is available to all students virtually or in person. You can schedule counseling services by calling CAPS or coming to the Brave Health Center, 2nd floor.

Counseling services include:
  • Psychotherapy Groups
  • Individual Counseling
  • Medication Management
  • Consultation and Referrals

Triage/Walk-In services are available from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday

These 30-minute sessions connect UNCP students with support from experienced counselors from CAPS without an appointment. This session involves a meeting between a student and a therapist to address their concerns and explore available options.

Following this discussion and the therapist's assessment of the provided paperwork, recommendations for services will be made. These recommendations may include but not limited to, self-help resources, workshops, brief goal-oriented individual therapy, or group therapy.

It is advised to arrive 15 minutes prior to the appointment to complete the necessary paperwork.

If you're experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress, CAPS offers same-day Crisis Consults in the office (2nd floor, Brave Health Center) from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Reasons to seek a Crisis Consult may include:

  • Suicidal or homicidal thoughts or plans

  • Hallucinations or disorganized thinking

  • A recent traumatic experience that feels overwhelming

Protocall Crisis Line Suicide Prevention & Mental Health Crisis
Advocacy services are free and confidential for any students who are survivors of, or accused of, sexual misconduct including stalking, rape, bullying, cyber stalking etc.
Prevention Education Programs are offered throughout the year and address topics to include suicide prevention, substance use prevention, stress management, mindfulness, student wellness and mental health stigma.

Getting Started With Therapy

Taking the first step can be hard, we want to make it easy. Follow the steps below to schedule your first appointment today.

All students begin with a brief triage appointment. This is a 30 minute conversation with a therapist to better understand your concerns and identify the most helpful next steps.

  • Visit us on the 2nd floor of the Brave Health Center

  • Available Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
    (Summer hours may vary)

  • Your Banner ID

  • Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete the necessary paperwork

Based on your triage appointment, recommendations may include:

  • Self-help resources

  • Group or individual therapy

  • Workshops or skills-based support

  • Referrals to off-campus providers

If you're a good fit for ongoing therapy, you'll be matched with a counselor and scheduled for regular sessions.

  • Sessions are typically 50 minutes

  • Meetings occur bi-weekly or as needed

  • Focus is on short-term, goal-oriented care

Note: CAPS does not offer long-term or intensive treatment. If your needs exceed our scope, we’ll help connect you with outside resources.

Brave Wellness

Brave Wellness is a campus-wide initiative that promotes student well-being through programs and events focused on mental, physical and emotional health. Led by CAPS in collaboration with Student Health and Campus Recreation, it offers resources and workshops that support a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

itMatters is a series of required online courses for new UNCP students that cover important topics like sexual assault prevention and alcohol misuse. These modules are designed to help you stay safe, make informed decisions and contribute to a respectful campus community.
