UNCP art student receives printmaking assistantship

UNC Pembroke’s Leeanna Earp has been selected as an assistant for the 40th annual Frogman’s Print Workshops. Frogman’s Print Workshop is recognized as one of the most prestigious printmaking workshops globally, drawing professional artists, educators and college students across the country. Earp, a senior studio art major, was selected as one of 12 workshop assistants. The annual summer workshops are hosted by the University of Nebraska Omaha’s School of the Arts.

Aaron Woods’ eyes welled up with tears as he spotted his parents seated inside the English Jones Center gymnasium during the processional minutes before his name would be called at the Winter Commencement at UNC Pembroke. At that moment, the Pembroke native reflected on the personal obstacles he had overcome in his decades-long journey to graduation.

UNCP partners with Farm Bureau to expand agriscience research

Eric Schwarz gained insight into agricultural practices of third-world countries while serving in the military. When he retired, Schwarz decided to enroll in the emerging Agriculture Science program at UNC Pembroke to study ways to make farming practices more sustainable. Today, Schwarz spends his time conducting research, growing hydroponic lettuce and investigating tomato cultivars inside a new 70-feet long high tunnel in the campus garden area.

UNCP celebrates the First-Gen experience

UNC Pembroke is celebrating our first-generation Braves Nov. 8-11 with events, workshops, resources and a “Voices of First-gen” exhibit in the University Center showcasing our first-gen faculty and staff.  “As a first-generation student myself, I am excited to have the opportunity to celebrate our first-generation students and I’m so proud of them and all their successes,” Dalton Hoffer, assistant director for Transition Programs, shared.

Shelley, Wiatrowski named 2021 Maynor Scholars

De’Maurion Shelley and Nina Wiatrowski have been named the 2021 Maynor Honors College scholars at UNC Pembroke. Recognized as UNCP’s most prestigious four-year scholarship, the Maynor Honors Scholarship pays tuition, fees, books, room and board. It is named for Esther Graham Maynor, a Pembroke native and one of the university’s most generous donors. Shelley, a freshman from Fayetteville studying history and social studies education, credits his former teachers with influencing his decision to pursue a career in the classroom.

Adjunct nursing professor honored with state award

UNC Pembroke Clinical Assistant Professor Jermecka Hamilton Covington has been named the 2021 Rookie of The Year by the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA). The annual award is given by the NCNA board of directors to a nurse who has been a member less than two years and excels at promoting a positive image of nursing and the professional organization to peers and consumers.

UNCP climbs in 2022 U.S. News’ Best Colleges ranking

UNC Pembroke appeared in four categories in the U.S. News & World Report 2022 Best Colleges rankings. UNCP was ranked No.65 among Regional Universities in the South—climbing 10 spots each of the last two years. UNCP also ranked as a top performer for Social Mobility (18th), Top Public Schools­–Regional Universities in the South (30th), and Best Undergraduate Nursing (221st).

PBS North Carolina, in partnership with the UNC System and the Board of Governors Committee on Historically Minority-Serving Institutions (HMSI), announces the new series The Innovators: The Transformative Power of NC's Historically Black and American Indian Universities.

Enrollment hits all-time high, despite pandemic

Enrollment has hit an all-time high as more students choose UNC Pembroke as their college of choice. The upward trend comes as the Office of Admissions overcame challenges with limited campus visitors and travel restrictions due to the pandemic.  UNCP is experiencing record enrollment for the fourth year in a row, according to university census data. Enrollment for Fall 2021 stands at 8,319, a 0.7% increase compared with Fall 2020. Over the last five years, UNCP has seen a 32% spike in overall enrollment.

Alumna Leyia Bullard Oxendine accepted to Physician Assistant program at Methodist University

Leyia Bullard Oxendine, a 2017 graduate of UNC Pembroke, has been accepted to the Physician Assistant program at Methodist University. Oxendine of Pembroke earned a bachelor of science in Nursing. She plans to return to Robeson County and serve as a healthcare provider.
