Storytelling wasn’t her profession, but Lois Lewis could tell a story with the best of them. “She told a good story,” said Tom Lewis of his late wife. “She came from a family of good storytellers and was brought up with the art.”
Dr. Robinson awarded counselor educator excellence award
Dr. Stephanie Robinson, an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling at UNC Pembroke, has been awarded the 2023 Addictions/Offender Counselor Educator Excellence Award.
UNCP dedicates Student Commons in honor of Dr. Ben Hardin
Dr. Ben Hardin was a Pembroke native and a trailblazer who left an indelible mark on Robeson County through his decades of practice as a physician. A 1965 graduate of Pembroke State College, Hardin was the first American Indian student to attend medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He mentored countless students, especially Native Americans, who dreamed of an education and giving back to their communities.
UNCP students serve Indigenous communities in Baltimore during Alternative Spring Break
More than a dozen UNC Pembroke students immersed themselves in service projects and leadership-building activities as part of an alternative spring break experience in Baltimore March 6-10. Students and staff partnered with several community-based organizations, spending a week volunteering at the Baltimore American Indian Center, Native American LifeLines, Breath of Life Lutheran Church and Baltimore Safe Haven. Baltimore is home to many Lumbee tribal members who migrated north after World War II seeking jobs.
UNCP theatre program alumnus accepted to Juilliard
UNC Pembroke theatre program graduate Jamonte Madison will join Juilliard’s elite ranks this fall. The Juilliard School — a world leader in performing arts education known for its competitive and selective admission standards — is famous for distinguished alumni, including actors Robin Williams, Kevin Spacey, Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain.
UNCP earns cybersecurity designation from the National Security Agency
The National Security Agency (NSA) — the nation’s leading cybersecurity agency — has designated UNC Pembroke as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD). The CAE-CD designation is awarded to regionally accredited academic institutions offering cybersecurity degrees or certificates at the associate, bachelor’s and graduate levels.
UNCP to offer Doctor of Nursing Practice program
UNC Pembroke has received approval from the UNC Board of Governors to establish a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a population health focus. The innovative program — the university’s first-ever doctoral program — will help reverse the shortage of health care professionals in underserved areas of the state and improve population health, individual patient experiences and health outcomes.
Peace Corps Director Carol Spahn visits UNCP, signs prep program MOA
Yamil Hernández Sánchez always knew he wanted to join the Peace Corps after forming lasting relationships with volunteers while living in Benin in high school. “I’ve always been passionate about advocacy,” said Sánchez, a senior at UNC Pembroke. “I met the (Peace Corps) director of Benin and volunteers, and they all described their experiences and how much being in Peace Corps helped them set up the next few years of their lives.”
UNCP students present at NC Council for Social Studies Education Conference
UNC Pembroke was well represented at the 2023 North Carolina Council for Social Studies Education Conference in Greensboro, held March 2-3. Twenty-six social studies education students and three elementary education students were in attendance.
