UNC Pembroke awards 1,117 degrees at Spring Commencement
Cindy Paul first started her college journey in 1985 — around the same year the parents of most of her UNC Pembroke classmates were born. At the time, she aspired to be a math teacher but went through a divorce, and her life took another turn.
Family affairs: Mother, son and husband, wife to cross UNCP stage together
Janett Nunez-Meza didn’t speak English when she immigrated to North Carolina from Nicaragua 16 years ago with her husband and five-year-old son. Her husband was hired by Smithfield Foods. Janett worked in fast food and picked blueberries before landing a job in the migrant education department with Bladen County Schools. She worked up to the state level but always dreamed of becoming a college graduate.
UNCP awards 1,181 degrees at Fall Commencement
Eric Perez Velazques was beaming with pride moments after crossing the stage during Fall Commencement at UNC Pembroke on Saturday. Velazques became the first in his family to earn a college degree, a reality he thought unattainable while growing up in neighboring Columbus County.

UNC System President Hans to speak at 2021 Winter Commencement
UNC System President Peter Hans will deliver the keynote address at Winter Commencement at UNC Pembroke. The undergraduate ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, in the main gym of the English Jones Athletic Center. The Graduate School ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, December 10, at Givens Performing Arts Center. Dr. Laura Staal, an award-winning professor of reading at UNCP, will serve as the keynote speaker.
Double Take: Locklear twins share love for their alma mater
UNC Pembroke Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings and platform guests were forced to do a double-take as identical twins Kelsey and Kyria Locklear crossed the stage, receiving matching degrees during Fall Commencement. The Locklear twins have caused people to see double their whole lives, from their childhood years in Red Springs on the softball diamond in high school and throughout their time pursuing degrees in exercise and sport science at UNCP.
