Pregnant & Parenting Students

UNC Pembroke is committed to creating and maintaining a community where all individuals enjoy freedom from discrimination, including discrimination on the basis of sex as mandated by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX).  Sex discrimination, which can include discrimination based on pregnancy, marital status, or parental status, is prohibited and illegal in admissions, educational programs and activities, hiring, leave policies, employment policies and health insurance coverage. UNC Pembroke has a policy and associated procedures for ensuring the protection and equal treatment of pregnant individuals, persons with pregnancy-related conditions and new parents. Below you will find information about student support, supportive measures, lactation rooms and more resources.

Student Support

Under Title IX, it is illegal for schools to exclude a pregnant student from participating in any part of an educational program. This prohibition applies to specific classes such as advanced placement or honors classes, extracurricular programs, interscholastic sports, honor societies and opportunities for student leadership, among other activities. Schools may implement special instructional programs or classes for a pregnant student, but participation must be completely voluntary on the part of the student, and the programs and classes must be comparable to those offered to other students.

In addition, a school must excuse a student’s absences because of pregnancy or childbirth for as long as the student’s doctor deems the absences medically necessary. When a student returns to school, she must be allowed to return to the same academic and extracurricular status as before her medical leave began.

Please use the Office of Title IX and Clery Compliance's Pregnant and Parenting Rights Complaint Form to notify the Title IX coordinator of problems associated with your interim measure.

Supportive Measures

Extended deadlines, make-up assignments (e.g., papers, quizzes, tests and presentations), tutoring, independent study, online course completion options and incomplete grades that can be completed at a later date, should all be employed and assistive supports typically provided by the Center for Student Success and the Accessibility Resource Center should be available. The university will not discriminate against students who are adopting, or whose significant other is pregnant, or is dealing with childbirth, false pregnancy, adoption, termination of pregnancy or recovery therefrom. These students will also be provided the same opportunities for supportive measures.

The Title IX Coordinator has the authority to determine that such supportive measures are necessary and appropriate and to inform faculty members of the need to adjust academic parameters accordingly.

Please use the Office of Title IX and Clery Compliance's Pregnant & Parenting Supportive Measures Request Form when seeking accommodations.

Lactation Rooms for Students, Employees & Visitors

UNC Pembroke supports breastfeeding and welcomes nursing mothers to our campus. We have dedicated three private locations as lactation rooms for students, employees and visitors. These rooms should be equipped with a comfortable chair, a small table and an electrical outlet. If the rooms listed below are not convenient, the Office of Title IX and Clery Compliance will try to find an appropriate space.

Please submit the Pregnant & Parenting Supportive Measures form to the Office of Title IX and Clery Compliance to arrange for use.
