UNCP music professor honored with International Composition Award

Dr. Joanna Hersey, professor of music and associate dean of Student Success and Curriculum for the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC Pembroke, was honored at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference held May 29-June 3 at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.

Alumna’s major gift will support experiential student learning

As a student service leader in UNC Pembroke’s Office for Community and Civic Engagement (CCE), Taley Hunt ’18, (MBA)’20 was profoundly impacted by the opportunity to give back to others. “We went out to volunteer, not just in the local community but in the wider world,” said Hunt. “Having those opportunities really shaped the way I view the world. I’ve learned that when you give and are actively involved in your community, people see that and want to align with you.”

Students inducted into honor society for biologists

Several of the Biology Department’s top scholars were inducted into the Psi Lambda chapter of TriBeta on April 25th. The large lecture room that hosted the event was dwarfed by a great turnout of family and friends.  As the chapter’s faculty advisor, Dr. Amber Rock welcomed the crowd, including more than two dozen students who would be inducted as Regular or Associate members of TriBeta. A catered buffet immediately followed the introductory remarks.

UNCP alumna Taliyah Daniels selected as Presidential Scholar

Taliyah Daniels, a 2023 graduate and former SGA president at UNC Pembroke, has been selected as a Presidential Scholar for the UNC System for the 2023-2024 academic year. Daniels was among three recent graduates of UNC System institutions selected for the prestigious program. Presidential Scholars provide a wide range of professional functions for the system office.

James Bell was all smiles as he watched the rocket he spent days building ignite and launch into the sky above the ROTC training field on the campus of UNC Pembroke. “This was awesome!” said Bell, pointing upward to the trail of white smoke.

First-generation UNCP student inspired by parents to become immigration lawyer

A daughter of Mexican immigrants, Magally Ortiz-Rojas has witnessed firsthand the hardships and struggles of family and others in the Hispanic community in their pursuit of U.S. citizenship. Ortiz-Rojas––a future change agent and immigration law advocate––aspires to become an attorney to assist others in navigating the path to naturalization. She wants to discover ways to eliminate financial and language barriers that her family fought to overcome.

An online World History course the summer before his freshman year of high school was the spark that ignited Benjamin Clark’s passion for history. He was captivated while learning about Alexander the Great’s conquests and the Roman Empire––considered one of the greatest civilizations of all time. Now a senior at UNC Pembroke, Clark chose to broaden his interests as a double major in history and American Indian studies.

PEMBROKE, NC – The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has released the Chancellor’s list and Honors list for Spring 2023.
