UNCP biology student excels in summer research

UNC Pembroke molecular biology student Martina Vanetten spent her summer as a member of the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation STEM Summer Immersion Program at East Carolina University. The selective program pairs a small cohort of undergraduate students across the UNC System with faculty mentors engaged in research through ECU’s College of Allied Health Sciences.

UNCP celebrates groundbreaking for town's wastewater infrastructure upgrades

Representatives with UNC Pembroke joined Pembroke town officials at a recent groundbreaking ceremony, marking the beginning of major upgrades to the town's wastewater treatment plant. "This is a historic occasion for the town of Pembroke," said Mayor Greg Cummings. "These improvements will help meet our town's current and future needs. It's all about economic growth.

UNCP’s Joseph Van Hassel performs percussion concert in Japan

UNC Pembroke music faculty member Joseph Van Hassel traveled to Japan this summer to perform percussion as a soloist and ensemble member. Dr. Van Hassel’s first engagement was performing at a concert of the percussion music of Takayoshi Yoshioka at the Takasaki City Theater––one of the largest live performance theatres in Japan. This concert included a performance by Van Hassel of Yoshioka’s Suite No. 4 for solo marimba, which was composed for him and premiered in April at UNCP.

“The Beat Goes On,” a tribute to iconic artist Cher comes to GPAC

The Givens Performing Arts Center is opening its 2023-24 Professional Artist Season and turning back time with a tribute to iconic artist Cher. The show will be held Friday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $19 to $29 for adults and $10 for children.

Dr. Kelly Brennan named vice chancellor for Enrollment Management at UNCP

Dr. Kelly Brennan has been named vice chancellor for Enrollment Management at UNC Pembroke. Dr. Brennan has over 25 years of enrollment experience at higher education institutions and brings expertise in designing processes, initiating new programs and delivering innovative student support services. She currently serves as associate provost for Enrollment Management at The Citadel. Chancellor Robin Gary Cummings made the announcement following a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees on Thursday. Brennan was selected following a national search.

UNCP pre-law students gain invaluable experience at UVA Law School

A trio of pre-law students at UNC Pembroke have a greater understanding of the legal field after spending their summer networking with faculty and professionals at the University of Virginia School of Law––one of the premier law schools in the country. Aspen Andersson, Jacob Butler and Magally Ortiz-Rojas participated in the UVA Roadmap Scholars Initiative. This two-year program supports undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in the legal profession to help them become competitive applicants to the nation’s top law schools.

UNCP inks academic pathway with ECU School of Dental Medicine

UNC Pembroke has signed an early assurance agreement with East Carolina University’s School of Dental Medicine. The unique agreement guarantees admission of UNCP students into the ECU School of Dental Medicine’s Doctor of Dental Medicine program upon meeting specific criteria and requirements. Beginning in fall 2024, one of the 52 seats in the SoDM will be reserved three years in advance for outstanding students entering UNCP as first-year students.

New members join UNCP Alumni Association Board

The UNC Pembroke Alumni Association recently welcomed four new members to its Board of Directors. Vanessa Gonzalez ’07, Amber Locklear, Chris Lowery ’13 and Christina Theodorou ’05 joined the board on July 1 and will each serve a two-year term.
