GearUp

GEAR UP NC at UNC Pembroke supports first-year students from partner high schools as they transition to college. Through one-on-one coaching, academic guidance and campus resource connections, the program helps students build a strong foundation for success. Participants receive personalized support throughout their first year to stay on track and thrive at UNCP.

FAQ: Am I first-gen?

GenONE has defined the term “first-generation college student” as a person who is the first in their family to attend college and/or neither parent or guardian graduated from a four year institution. This definition is in coordination with the federal definition used from TRIO and Pell Grant eligibility programs.

If you identify as first-generation, review the instructions below to self-identify with us and join GenONE. Once you identify, you will have exclusive access to success coaching, resources, programs and peer mentoring for first-year students. If you have completed your FAFSA, you had to indicate whether or not you were first-generation.  If you selected yes, you should already be listed as first-generation with UNCP.

New Student Programs invites any faculty, staff or student at UNC Pembroke to self-identify as first-generation and/or express interest in learning more on engaging with this student population.

Peer Academic Leaders

The Center for Student Success (CSS) is home to the Peer Academic Leaders (PALs). PALs serve all first-year, first-generation students in their transition to UNCP by matching them with a trained Peer Academic Leader. The program is developed to enhance knowledge of campus resources, foster a stronger sense of belonging and cultivate a peer support system that leads to student success.

YearONE provides an inclusive peer mentor community that enhances student success through curricular and co-curricular programs and resources that increase retention of first-generation Braves. Contact CSS to connect with a PAL.
