FAQ: Am I first-gen?
GenONE has defined the term “first-generation college student” as a person who is the first in their family to attend college and/or neither parent or guardian graduated from a four year institution. This definition is in coordination with the federal definition used from TRIO and Pell Grant eligibility programs.
New Student Programs invites any faculty, staff or student at UNC Pembroke to self-identify as first-generation and/or express interest in learning more on engaging with this student population.

Peer Academic Leaders
The Center for Student Success (CSS) is home to the Peer Academic Leaders (PALs).
PALs serve all first-year, first-generation students in their transition to UNCP by
matching them with a trained Peer Academic Leader. The program is developed to enhance
knowledge of campus resources, foster a stronger sense of belonging and cultivate
a peer support system that leads to student success.
YearONE provides an inclusive peer mentor community that enhances student success
through curricular and co-curricular programs and resources that increase retention
of first-generation Braves. Contact CSS to connect with a PAL.
