It covers the new student process, including admissions and visa application procedures, guidance on immigration requirements and document shipping and tips for preparing for arrival.

New Student Process

Apply to UNCP

All international students must apply for admission to UNCP by clicking Undergraduate Admissions or Graduate Admissions.

If you are informed that you must improve your English proficiency before you are eligible for admission, please visit the English Language Institute website.

Request your immigration documents from OGE

After you have been admitted to UNCP, you will be prompted to upload your immigration documents in your application portal.

We will create your record in SEVIS once the necessary documents are provided.

Necessary documents may be all or some of the following;

  1. Bank Statements
  2. Passport

Review Your Document

You should review your document when you receive your electronic I-20 (if you are an F-1 student) or DS-2019 (if you are a J-1 student).

If you want the original I-20 shipped to you, you can purchase a prepaid label from eShipGlobal. If you are a J-1 student, you must ship the original DS-2019. Click here for instructions

Check the spelling of your name, your date of birth, country of citizenship, country of birth, major, the dates of your program and your education level.

If something needs to be corrected, contact OGE via email at oge@uncp.edu.

If everything is correct, sign your I-20 or DS-2019 (at the bottom of the first page).

Be sure to read the second page of your I-20 or DS-2019 for important immigration requirements.

Pay SEVIS Fee

All student visa applicants must pay the SEVIS fee prior to going to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for the visa interview.

Students will use the I-20 or DS-2019 issued by the school where they intend to study to pay the fee online. Payment will be made here.

Print the receipt and bring it to the Consulate interview as proof of your payment.

Canadian and Bermuda citizens are not required to have an F-1 visa, but they must pay the SEVIS fee and show proof of payment in order to qualify for admission at the Port of Entry (POE).

Apply for Student Visa

You must apply for a student visa from a U.S. Embassy/Consulate. (NOTE: A visa is not required for Canadians.)

The U.S. Embassy or Consulate closest to your home will usually process your visa application. Use the Study in the States website to locate the nearest embassy or consulate.

When should you apply?
  • A student visa can be issued no more than 120 days before the start date listed on your Form I-20 or DS-2019.
  • Students cannot enter the U.S. before 30 days prior to their program start date.

When you plan your visa appointment, reserve enough time to attend the appointment and receive your approval.

Check the Embassy’s processing time to ensure your visa will arrive on time.

What should you take to the U.S. Embassy/Consulate?

Go to the State Department website to complete the online form for a visa application.

It is crucial that you take all of the required documents to your visa appointment.

Be sure to take:

  • Your valid passport, with at least six months' validity on it from the date you will enter the U.S. and all previously issued passports
  • The receipt from your SEVIS I-901 fee payment
  • The I-20 or DS-2019 form provided by UNCP or your sponsoring agency
  • A letter of admission from UNCP
  • A copy of your TOEFL Score, if you are a non-native English speaker
  • Original proof of your financial support
  • Passport-sized photographs for your visa.
  • Previous school transcripts, diplomas or records
  • Proof of ties to your home country. The F-1 and J-1 visas are non-immigrant visas, which means you must be able to prove that you will return to your home country after you complete your program of study at UNCP. Visit the embassy website for information about the documentation you should bring.
What happens at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate

You will be required to speak with a consular official who will quickly review your documents and ask about your plans of study.

The officer will verify that you have the academic ability, English language skills and financial resources to study at UNCP.

Since you are applying for a non-immigrant visa, the officer will require documentation of proof of intent to return to your home country.

The officer will give you instructions about when to return to pick up your documents and your visa or when to expect them in the mail.

A few applicants may receive a request to submit additional information.

Review Your Visa

Make sure that the following information is correct:

  • Your first, middle and last names are spelled correctly.
  • Your date of birth is correct in the mm/dd/yyyy format.
  • Your visa type is F-1 or J-1, depending on your status.

The visa is the one immigration document that cannot be applied for or obtained in the U.S.; if you enter the U.S. and your information is incorrect, you must exit the U.S. to apply for a new visa.

If your visa is not correct, it will affect your ability to obtain a driver’s license (DL) and/or a Social Security number (SSN).

WARNING! Do not enter the U.S. on a tourist visa!

You must enter the U.S. on a student visa. If you attempt to enter the U.S. on an incorrect visa, you may encounter immigration problems. You cannot attend UNCP if you enter the U.S. on a tourist visa.

Travel Arrangements & Pre-Arrival

After you obtain the visa, your travel arrangements and preparations can be made. F-1 and J-1 students can enter the U.S. within the 30-day window before the report date on the visa certificate. Make sure to review the Pre-Arrival Guide and sign up for International New Student Orientation.

International Student Orientation

You must report to OGE for mandatory check-in within 30 days of your arrival. Failure to do so could result in the termination of your SEVIS record and jeopardize your legal ability to remain in the U.S.

Physical check-in will take place before the semester begins. Please bring the following immigration documents with you to the check-in session:

  • 1-20 or DS-2019 Form
  • Passport, noting your entry stamp
  • Visa (if applicable)
  • I-94 Form

Transferring to a new school in the U.S. requires advanced planning. If the proper immigration process is followed, a student may legally stay in the U.S. between finishing classes at one school and starting at another.

This process requires the old school to "release" the student's SEVIS record to UNCP. Once this is done, UNCP will issue a new "transfer-in" Form I-20 of DS-2019.

If you have already been admitted to UNCP and would like more information about how to transfer your SEVIS record to UNCP, click here.

OGE will assist you in understanding and complying with the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration regulations and required documentation during your stay at UNCP. DHS requires us to create and maintain your Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) immigration record.

U.S. regulations require you to keep us informed of any changes to your academic status, or your immigration status, so that we can update your SEVIS record in a timely fashion. Our office is the best place to ask any questions you may have regarding your immigration status while in the U.S.

In order to have your SEVIS record registered when you arrive on campus, you must report to OGE for mandatory immigration check-in. Failure to do so could result in a termination of your SEVIS record, and jeopardize your legal ability to remain in the U.S.

Check out the International Student Life Cycle (F-1/M-1) to further your understanding on applying for a visa.

DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTS

Degree-seeking students are undergraduate or graduate-level students who intend to graduate from UNCP at the completion of their program.

They will be issued an F-1 visa, and the Form 1-20 will be issued for the length of the student's academic program.

If you are a degree-seeking student, you can find further information about your immigration status and the U.S. immigration system at here.

NON-DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTS

If your institution has a formal exchange agreement with UNCP, you will be admitted as a non-degree exchange student.

Non-degree-seeking exchange students will be issued a J-1 visa, and a DS-2019 will be issued for the length of the student's exchange program.

If you are a non-degree-seeking student, you can find more information about your status and the U.S. immigration system here.

As an international student in the U.S., you may be asked from time to time about your visa or your status. While in most situations in the U.S. the two are interchangeable, it is a good idea for your to know the difference.

VISA

  • A visa is a stamp in your passport, which is issues by a U.S. Embassy or consulate overseas. Visas cannot be obtained in the U.S.
  • The purpose of a visa is to allow you to be taken to a U.S. Point of Entry where it will be determined whether you are eligible for admission to the U.S.
  • After you have been admitted to the U.S., the visa in your passport does not need to remain valid in order for you to stay in the country legally. However, if you travel outside of the U.S., then a new student visa may be required in order for you to re-enter the country. If you plan on traveling outside the U.S., you should check the expiration date on your passport to ensure that it is still valid.

STATUS

  • You will be granted an immigration status upon clearing inspection at a U.S. Point of Entry.
  • This status can be found on your I-94 printout.
  • Your passport will include an entry stamp showing the date of entry into the U.S. and your Class of Admission (J-1 or F-1, depending on your status.)
  • Your status grants you permission to remain in the U.S. while you pursue your degree, as long as you maintain your immigration status.

This will provide more space and a home-like environment for your family to adjust. You can search for properties in Pembroke or nearby areas like Lumberton and Red Springs.

Navigating Pembroke and Surrounding Areas

For a first-time international visitor, it might be useful to understand the basics of navigating the town and its surrounding areas.

  • Transportation:
    • Car Rental: The best option for getting around, especially since public transport options are limited in this area. Renting a car will allow your family to explore Pembroke and the nearby towns at your convenience.
    • Ridesharing: Services like Uber and Lyft are available in the area but may not be as frequent in rural regions, so a rental car is a better option.
    • Walking: UNC Pembroke has a walkable campus, and you can easily navigate between academic buildings. However, for off-campus activities, walking might not always be practical, especially if you want to explore local shopping centers or other places.
  • Visiting Local Amenities:
    • Walmart: There’s a Walmart Supercenter in Pembroke for groceries, household items and more.
    • Food Lion: There's a Food Lion in Pembroke for groceries, household items and more.
    • Lumberton: This larger town (about 15 miles away) has additional shopping malls, small shops, restaurants and a variety of services.
Family Activities in Pembroke

Although Pembroke is a small town, it has some fun family-friendly activities you can enjoy:

  • Luther Britt Park: A short drive from Pembroke, this park offers trails for hiking.
  • Lumber River State Park: A short drive from Pembroke, this park offers trails for hiking, fishing and canoeing.
  • UNC Pembroke Cultural Events: The university often hosts cultural events, performances and student activities that your family can enjoy together.
Additional Tips
  • Time Zone: Pembroke is in the Eastern Time Zone (ET).
  • Weather: Be prepared for the weather; it can get very hot in the summer months (up to 95°F or 35°C), and winters are generally mild but can get chilly (around 40°F or 5°C). You may need to buy a few seasonal clothing items if you haven’t already.
  • Mobile Services: If your family is staying long-term, getting a local SIM card or activating an international phone plan is a good idea. Major carriers like AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile have stores nearby.
Final Thoughts

For first-time international students and their families, adjusting to a new country can feel overwhelming, but remember that UNC Pembroke and the surrounding community are there to support you. Take advantage of local resources, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow students, staff and residents.

If you need more specific recommendations or advice for your stay, feel free to ask!

On-Campus Housing

Freshmen and sophomores are required to stay on campus as part of our residency requirement. For more information regarding our two-year residency requirement, please visit us at Residency Requirement. Please make sure you do not sign any off-campus housing leases without being approved. This will result in you paying additional housing costs.

Along with the two-year residency requirement, there is an associated meal plan. Due to the limited availability of diverse food resources in the surrounding area, a mandatory meal plan is in place to ensure all students have access to nutritious and balanced meals within the residential community.

It is important to be aware that this requirement may present challenges for individuals with specific religious or dietary needs. We encourage you to carefully consider this requirement in light of your personal circumstances.

If you plan to stay on campus, complete the housing application on BraveWeb as soon as possible. Click here for instructions.

  • You must set up your BraveWeb account before you can complete the application. Some international students are not able to do this before they arrive. North Carolina, located in the southeastern United States, experiences a diverse range of weather patterns throughout the year. Here's a breakdown of the weather you can expect in the southeastern area of North Carolina:

1. Summers (June to August):

  • Temperature: Summers in southeastern North Carolina are typically hot and humid. Average high temperatures range from the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (29-35°C), with occasional heatwaves pushing temperatures higher.
  • Humidity: High humidity levels are common during the summer months, often making it feel warmer than the actual temperature.
  • Rainfall: Summer is the wettest season, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and occasional tropical systems or hurricanes bringing heavy rainfall.

2. Autumn (September to November):

  • Temperature: Autumn brings relief from the summer heat, with temperatures gradually cooling down. Highs range from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (24-28°C) early in the season, dropping to the 60s (15-20°C) by November.
  • Humidity: Humidity decreases compared to summer but remains moderate.
  • Rainfall: Rainfall decreases throughout the season, with fewer thunderstorms and a transition toward more frontal systems bringing rain.

3. Winter (December to February):

  • Temperature: Winters are generally mild but can vary. Average highs range from the upper 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit (14-18°C), with occasional colder periods where temperatures can drop below freezing at night.
  • Precipitation: Winter is the driest season, with fewer rainy days. Snow is rare but can occur occasionally, especially in northern parts of the state.

4. Spring (March to May):

  • Temperature: Spring sees a gradual warming trend. Highs start in the 60s Fahrenheit (15-20°C) early in the season and reach the mid-70s to low 80s (24-28°C) by May.
  • Humidity: Humidity increases as spring progresses.
  • Rainfall: Spring can be quite wet, with increasing chances of thunderstorms as temperatures rise. Rainfall totals begin to increase heading into summer.

Other Considerations:

  • Tropical Weather: Southeastern North Carolina is susceptible to tropical storms and hurricanes, primarily from June to November. These storms can bring heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding.
  • Microclimates: Variations in elevation and proximity to the coast can lead to microclimates within the region, influencing local weather patterns.

Overall, the southeastern area of North Carolina offers a mix of warm summers, mild winters and transitional spring and autumn seasons, with notable influences from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains.
